Denied late winner by VAR
Khalilzadeh generated one shot (zero on goal) in Friday's 1-1 draw versus Egypt. In addition, he was given a yellow card in the 94th minute.
Analysis: Khalilzadeh became the central figure of one of the group stage's most dramatic moments when he fired what appeared to be a 93rd minute winner against Egypt from a rebound at the back post, only for VAR to rule it out for offside by the slimmest of margins. It left Iran with a 1-1 draw and an anxious wait on their fate that ended in elimination. Away from that painful moment he was a commanding presence throughout as Iran's undisputed starter, accumulating six tackles, three interceptions, 28 clearances and five blocks across the group stage as Iran kept one clean sheet and conceded just three goals.
Makes 14 clearances in draw
Khalilzadeh had one shot (zero on goal) and 14 clearances in Sunday's 0-0 draw against Belgium.
Analysis: Khalilzadeh was extremely busy as part of a highly defensive Iran lineup that managed to hold the group favorites scoreless. The veteran center-back led all players in the game in clearances, duels won, tackles and blocks, and he completed 90 minutes on the field for the second time in as many matches. With his side still in contention to make the round of 32, they'll likely continue to rely on their defensive momentum in the upcoming clash against Egypt's dangerous attackers.
